Nintendo has been in the gaming business for years now. They know that gaming isn’t about High Definition graphics, shading technology or about any life-like graphics that wows the crowd on first sight. It is about fun. Through all these technological pursuits, console makers often forget the true essence of gaming.
What we have on the other consoles are familiar titles like Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed. These are classes of games that are violent – where only hardcore gamers or hobbyists are likely to be interested in. The Wii in contrast have many friendlier titles that have less culling and bloodshed, but just harmless fun. Games like their Mario series games are a perfect example. Protective parents are also mindful over violent themes. The Wii would immediately make a better choice.
Interactivity is also a very important factor when consider the Nintendo Wii.
Traditionally, Consoles are based on a gamepad. This tiny little pad with joysticks allow you to snuggle comfortably in one corner of your couch, pounding away the buttons in the heat of the game. While this may be acceptably interesting for some, it undeniably gets boring after a while. If it’s going to be a shooting game, it’s one button to shoot. If it’s going to be a action game, it’s the same few moves being performed with very similar combinations. It’s just those few buttons.
On the other hand, the Nintendo Wii has incorporated an interactive function into their console. Instead of just one little gamepad, you now have a remote with motion sensors, and a huge variety of add-ons which can be purchased separately. The motion sensors allow you to play games “realistically” like bowling (rolling the ball), golf (swinging the stick) and many more. Popular add-ons include the Wii Fit, a floor pad with four separate pressure pads. These allow you to follow fun-filled games with the console that will give you a workout at the same time. There are other things like microphones for singing games, a bow and arrow for archery, a gun for shooting games – the list goes on.
The Wii has such a large variety of fun interactive games that provides the entire family with harmless fun. It is affordable, the games are cheaper, and there are plenty of add-ons whenever you get bored. It isn’t portable like the Portable PlayStation, it doesn’t have superior technology compared to the Xbox or the PlayStation, and it doesn’t have the intricacies of a computer. But it has the single most important thing – the spirit of gaming.

The idea behind the creation of Sonic the Hedgehog was an existing need at Sega Corporation to create a video game character to rival Nintendo’s extremely successful Mario. At the time, the existing competition in part of Sega laid on “Alex the Kidd”, a pretty unsuccessful effort that many video game players and fans hardly remember today. A team of developers at Sega got together, including Artist Naoto ?shima, designer Hirokazu Yasuhara and programmer Yuji Naka, to create what came to be one of the most famous video game characters to hit the game screens with over 50 million copies sold worldwide. Early suggestions included a rabbit with extended ears, and a Theodore Roosevelt look alike. In the end, their hopes where placed on Sonic, who carries the colors of the Sega company logo.
Now that the Sonic image had been created, artist and programmers went to work at giving form to their creation, and developing a video game around the blue blur. Finally, Sonic the Hedgehog game was sent out to retail stores on June 23, 1991 to expecting fans everywhere. The game contained many of the ingredients Sonic is known for today. Among the features in the first title where the creation of Sonic’s worst enemy, Dr. Robotnik, also known as Eggman, the green hills in the background, treasure hunting in the form of rings and the famous (very hard to get) Chaos Emeralds, and of course, his infamous speed for running, jumping through loops and dodging enemies. The game seemed to catch on quickly, with harmonious tunes that kept video game players coming back and spreading the word. The team at Sega had accomplished what they set out to do as Sonic and friends became a serious contender with Mario and Super Mario in the video games arena. Sega took advantage of this momentum and released Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 1992. This time, Sonic was a little faster, bigger, and now counted with the introduction of Miles “Tails” Prower, one of Sonic’s best friends who followed Sonic around in his adventure, or could also be controlled by a second player. The game succeeded in adding to Sonic’s popularity, and as sales continue to rise Sonic came out in a cartoon series and also as a comic book.
A couple more titles continued to follow, many of which came out for Sega’s magadrive console, and the short lived Sega Saturn. But despite Sega’s misfortune with their game console, it has not been the case with Sonic the Hedgehog, which continues to entertain his millions of fans everywhere.

Video games are often long, complex, and challenging. Yet players have to learn them and enjoy learning them or the companies that make them go broke. Video games furthermore “empower” certain children who have a difficult time in social situations. For example, a child who is an outcast may gain social standing because he is a video game aficionado. Video games are an excellent way to relieve stress. In fact, for the average non-gamer, spending 15 to 20 minutes a day playing an easy to learn, though difficult to conquer, game like Tetris or Minesweeper, will do wonders for stress relief.
Video games have remained popular since their introduction in the United States in the 1970s. A trend toward increased violence and realism in electronic games in the 1980s and 1990s has prompted concern from parents and educators. Video Games Live is not just a concert, but a celebration of the entire video game industry that people of all ages will adore.
Video games are developing fast in all areas, but the problem is of cost, and how developers intend to keep the costs low enough to attract publisher investment. Most video game console development teams number anywhere from 20 to 50 people, with some teams exceeding 100. Video games have been made into films, such as Mortal Kombat I and II , and film stars now sometimes appear in video games–Christopher Walken was in Privateer 2: The Darkening . The graphics in many games have taken on such a high degree of realism that they almost seem like film.
Video games are so much fun and you can disconnect yourself from everything else going on around you and kind of just drift off into dreamland for a moment, it can be nice once in awhile. These video games have taken over the world, they have become so popular that almost all households owns atleast one type of video game, for the children and the adults as well. Video games fall somewhere between the two categories, needing both the mental exercise of determining the best way to play, and application of game mechanics through manual skill. It’s not too much of a stretch to say that very few, if any players choose to play games because of their cultural artistic merit. Video games are cultural artifacts that must be taken seriously.
Parents have the responsibility of helping their children select books, toys, television programs and movies that are appropriate for each particular child. Entertainment materials should be fun, engaging and spur creative fantasy. Parental education – not unconstitutional regulation – is the solution to keeping inappropriate games away from children.
